Online Quiz by RP Unit

RP Unit conducted online quiz competition through Instagram (a social media platform). The students who gave the right answers through direct messaging were given prizes. Below are the list of winners.

Question: A special prize for those who can say something meaningful about the collage of these two photos.

Answer: The person to the left is Justice Hans Raj Khanna who gave the dissenting judgment in the Habeas Corpus Case (ADM Jabalpur v. Shivkant Shukla). The person to the right in the collage is Justice DY Chandrachud who has given a dissenting judgment in the Aadhar case, by stating that it violates the fundamental rights. Both are great dissenters who have protected the Fundamental Rights through their dissents.

Senior selection moot

On 29th September, 2018 the Moot Court Society of SDM Law College has conducted the Senior Selection Moot Court Competition for the academic year 2018-19. The competition witnessed a vibrant set of mooters from senior category. The senior category consisted of students from 3rd year to 5th year of BA LLB and BBA LLB and also 2nd and 3rd years of LLB. The lot picking for the category was held on 20.09.2018 in room no. 204.

This year the moot court society had an object to well equip the students for any moot representation outside the college and also to make them well acquainted with legal knowledge. So as a step towards it, this time the selected area for moot proposition was from ‘Intellectual Property Rights ‘and the participants were asked to submit memorials along with their oral submissions. The competition commenced at 11:00 AM and ended up at 2:30 PM.

The competition was presided over by eminent lawyers of Mangalore and Expertise of SDM Law College. The esteemed presiding Judges were Adv. Anita Kini, Adv. Shine, Adv. Ashfaq, Adv. Ravi Shankar, Adv. Manmohan, Adv. Sathish, Adv. Prajwal, Adv. Vinayak,Adv. Malvika, Mr. Mahesh Chandra Nayak, Mrs. Balika, Ms. Suma,Mr. Gagan K, and Ms. Josna.

The competition was conducted in 7 Court Halls and the same was arranged in the class rooms of 2nd and 3rd Floor of the college. Apart from participants we had a good set of volunteers. There were 14 escorts who had taken up the duty to escort the judges to the respective court halls and also introducing the judges to the participants. We had 14 bench clerks who have helped us in time management and further court proceedings.

The students were ranked, according to the marks given by the respected judges. The 1st Rank was shared by Mr. Charan Raj and Ms. Haritha Varma, the 2nd rank was shared by Ms. Bhagirathi and Mr. Prakash and the 3rd rank was secured by Ms. Adlene. The Best Memorial was secured by Mr.Amith Castelino and Mr.Tsering. The same results were put upon the notice board on the very next working day.

All together, the whole event was a grand success. The Judges for these days were duly respected and the Moot Court society on behalf of SDM Law College handed over the Appreciation Certificate and token of gratitude for their valuable time.

Essay Competition: My Struggle with the Truth

Summary of the event / Additional information:
The Unit organized an essay competition on account of Gandhi Jayanthi to be celebrated on 2nd October. The broad theme for the essays was “My Struggle With the Truth” which is inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s autobiography titles “My Experiments with Truth.” The competition was open to all. The contestants were given 1 hour to write their essay. The contestants were given the liberty to interpret the said theme in any way they chose to. Totally 8 students participated in the competition. The evaluation of the English essays has been done by Mr. Mahesh Chandra Nayak and Mrs. Ujwala. The Kannada essays have been evaluated by Mr. Naresh Malligemadu. The event was organised by Aditya D’Mello. The best of these essays will be published in the college magazine – Pragathi.

Orientation Programme by NSS

On account of NSS day which is celebrated on 24th September every year, National Service Scheme Unit of Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Law College and Centre for Post Graduate Studies and Research in Law Mangaluru organised Orientation programme on 27-09-2018 in the college auditorium.

Sri. NareshMalligemadu, Assistant Professor and HOD of Humanities and Sri. Rakshith B.V, Assistant Professor were the resource persons. They addressed the volunteers on various topics like importance of NSS, disciplinary matter and various activities that can be organised under NSS banner. Ms. Suma Suresh Kogilgeri, Assistant Professor, NSS Co-ordinator was present and Mr. Santhosh Kumar, Librarian, Assistant Co-ordinator addressed the gathering. Unit leaders Mr. Nagaraj Bhandari, Ms. Veekshitha was also present.

Summary of the event / Additional information:
A talk on “Startups and the Law” was organised for all the second year BBA LLB students. “A startup is a company working to solve a problem where the solution is not obvious and success is not guaranteed,” says Neil Blumenthal, cofounder and co-CEO of Warby Parker. Startups help in innovation, creating jobs, new products and Services and bring profits for investors. The study focused on the legal aspects like – business organisation, tax matters, contracts and labour issues with respect to startups. SathyaSagar Mithra and SwathiBaliga helped in organising the talk. This was done in collaboration with Ms. PrekshaMayadi (Assistant Professor, SDMLC).

Junior Selection Moot

On 22nd September, 2018 the Moot Court Society of SDM Law College has conducted the Junior Selection Moot Court Competition for the academic year 2018-19. The junior category consisted of students from 1st year and 2nd year of BA LLB and BBA LLB and also 1st years of LLB. One team comprised of three members including two speakers and one researcher. 32 teams have participated for the same. Lot picking for the category was held on 11.09.2018 in room no. 204 at 2:00 PM. On 20.09.2018 the memorials were collected from the participants.

And thereby the concept of submission of memorials was introduced along with the arguments.The area opted for the moot proposition was Constitutional law.
The competition commenced at 11:00 AM and ended up at 2:30 PM.

The same results were put upon the notice board on the very next day.
The presentation and research of the participants were really appreciated by the judges. And the competition had met the spirit of mooting and was a grand success.

Summary of the event / Additional information:
The Karnataka State Law University (KSLU), Hubbali to which SDMLC is affiliated has introduced internal assessment from the current academic year. Writing assignments therefore, has become an integral part of the course work. But, first year students are often lost when it comes to such an exercise because they are unfamiliar with the format in which the assignments have to be submitted and also have very little idea about the topics assigned.With this in mind, the Unit thought it best to conduct a brief session to give an overview of how to write assignments. The session was tailor-made for the first year BBA students by giving them comparative ideas of how to deal with topics that are purely related to Business Administration and those that are related to law. Special emphasis was given to the concept of case analysis. Memorial Session

The moot court society had introduced a new idea of including memorial submission along with argument presentation for the selection moot court competition. It was conducted for all the interested students to make them know ‘How to write a Memorial?’

The session was held on 17.09.2018 in room no: 204 at 2:00 PM and saw an overwhelming participation of more than 100 students. It was conducted by office bearers of the moot court society. The same was presented by a Power Point Presentation and a sample memorial was shown to the participants and each of its main contents was accurately explained. Special emphasis was given to the junior category on ‘how to find out citations and make footnotes’.
All the queries and doubts regarding the memorials raised by the students were clarified and the session was winded up by one hour.

Vana Mahotsava Day by NSS and Eco Club

National Service Scheme Unit and Eco-club of ShriDharmasthalaManjunatheshwara Law College and Centre for Post Graduate Studies and Research in Law Mangaluru organised Vanamahotsava day on 17-09-2018 in Government Higher Primary School, BejaiKapikad, Mangaluru.

The session was held with an intention to emphasize on the importance of research for law students. A general overview of research and legal research, more specifically was given. The idea of research often invokes a mixed response of fear and intimidation. The goal therefore, was to introduce the concept of research to the freshers by eliminating all misconceptions associated with it and to ensure that they perceive it more favorably. Various aspects of research were touched upon including addressing concepts such as reflective thinking, identifying a research problem, understanding hypothesis, objectives of research, research writing, citation rules and so on.In addition to this, the practical application of legal research was also talked about. The target audience for the session was all 1st BA LLB students.
